A factory reset wipes your phone clean — exactly what you want when fixing a stubborn problem or selling a device, but a disaster if you have not prepared. Run through this checklist before you reset any Android phone so you do not lose data or get locked out afterward.
1. Back up everything that matters
Photos, contacts, messages, and app data are erased permanently. Turn on Settings > Google > Backup > Back up now, confirm Google Photos has synced, and copy anything irreplaceable to a computer. Full steps: our backup guide.
2. Remove your Google account and screen lock first
The step most people forget. Go to Settings > Accounts, remove your Google account, and remove your PIN/pattern before resetting. Skip this and Factory Reset Protection (FRP) will demand the previous Google account after the reset — and if you cannot provide it, the phone is locked.
3. Note your IMEI and account details
Dial *#06# and save your IMEI (useful for warranty or insurance), and make sure you remember your Google email and password to sign back in.
4. Remove the SD card and SIM (optional)
Remove a microSD card if you want it untouched, and the SIM if you are selling the phone.
5. Charge to at least 50%
A reset that loses power partway can corrupt the system — charge up or stay plugged in.
