A Motorola Edge 50 hard reset wipes your phone back to its out-of-the-box state, clearing every app, account and setting. When you need a hard reset
A factory reset is the right move when software problems persist after a normal restart. Typical triggers include repeated app crashes, a forgotten lock pattern (only useful if you can still sign in to Google afterwards), malware you cannot remove, or preparing the device for resale. If the phone simply needs a refresh, try a normal restart first. A hard reset is permanent and erases internal storage, so treat it as a last resort. Before you start
Two things protect you from losing data or getting locked out:
- Charge the battery to at least 50%. A reset that stops halfway because of a dead battery can leave the phone in a bad state.

Method 1 – factory reset from Settings
If the phone still boots and you can unlock it, this is the cleanest method. The Edge 50 runs Motorola’s near-stock Hello UI on Android, so the path is straightforward:
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap Reset options.
- Select Erase all data (factory reset).
- Review the list of accounts and data that will be removed, then tap Erase all data.
- Enter your PIN, pattern or password if prompted, then confirm.
The phone reboots, wipes itself and restarts on the welcome screen. This is the recommended Motorola Edge 50 hard reset because it clears the Google account from the device first, which avoids the anti-theft lock catching you out later.
Method 2 – hard reset from Recovery
Use this when the screen is frozen, the phone is stuck in a boot loop, or you cannot reach Settings. You will navigate with the hardware buttons.
- Power the phone off completely. Hold the Power button and choose Power off, or hold Power for around 10 seconds to force it down.
- Press and hold Volume Down + Power together until the bootloader menu appears.
- Use Volume Down to scroll to Recovery mode and press Power to select it.
- If you see an Android robot with “No command”, press and hold Power, then tap Volume Up once and release. This opens the Android recovery menu.
- Highlight Wipe data/factory reset with the volume keys and confirm with the Power button.
- Select Factory data reset (or Yes) to confirm.
- When the wipe finishes, choose Reboot system now.

A note on the Google FRP lock
Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is Android’s anti-theft feature. After any factory reset, the Edge 50 will ask you to sign in with the Google account that was previously on the device. If you reset through the recovery menu without removing the account first, and you do not know those credentials, the phone can become locked at setup. Always remove your Google account or do the reset from Settings when possible. If you are locked out of a phone you legitimately own, the official route is to verify ownership through Find My Device from Google.
Frequently asked questions
Will a hard reset remove the Google FRP lock?
No. A factory reset wipes your data but FRP is designed to survive it. The phone will still demand the last synced Google account at setup. The only proper way to clear FRP is to sign in with that account, which is why you should know your credentials before resetting.
How long does the reset take?
The wipe itself usually finishes in a couple of minutes. The first boot afterwards takes longer, often five to fifteen minutes, while the Edge 50 rebuilds its system. Do not interrupt it during this stage even if the screen seems stuck.
