If your Nothing Phone 2a is freezing, stuck in a boot loop, running painfully slow, or you are about to sell or trade it in, a clean wipe is often the fastest fix. A Nothing Phone 2a hard reset erases all user data and returns the device to the same state it had out of the box, running Nothing OS over Android. This guide covers both ways to do it: from inside Settings when the phone still boots normally, and from the hardware Recovery menu when the screen is unresponsive or stuck. Follow the steps carefully, because a factory reset cannot be undone.
When you need a hard reset
A hard reset is the right move in a handful of situations: the phone keeps crashing or rebooting on its own, apps force-close constantly, you forgot your screen lock and cannot get in, performance has degraded after a bad update, or you are passing the device to someone else. If you only have one misbehaving app, try clearing that app’s cache first. A full reset is the heavy-duty option once the smaller fixes have failed. Before you start
Two things matter before you wipe anything.
- Charge the battery to at least 50%. A reset that loses power partway through can leave the phone in an unstable state.

Method 1 – factory reset from Settings
Use this method when the Phone 2a still turns on and you can navigate the screen. On Nothing OS the path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap Reset options.
- Choose Erase all data (factory reset).
- Tap Erase all data, enter your PIN, pattern, or password if prompted, then confirm.
The phone will reboot, wipe its storage, and restart at the initial setup screen. This software-based factory reset is the cleanest option because it lets Nothing OS clear your Google account properly during the process, which reduces the chance of being locked out afterward.
Method 2 – hard reset from Recovery
If the screen is frozen, the phone is stuck on the Nothing logo, or you cannot reach Settings, use Recovery mode instead. The Phone 2a uses the standard Android Recovery environment.
- Power the phone off completely. If it is unresponsive, hold the Power button for around 10 seconds to force it off.
- Press and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons together until the screen lights up, then release.
- You will land on the bootloader/Fastboot screen. Use Volume Up or Volume Down to highlight Recovery mode, then press Power to select it.
- At the Android Recovery menu, use the volume keys to move and the power key to confirm. Select Wipe data/factory reset.
- Highlight Factory data reset and confirm with the power button.
- When the wipe finishes, choose Reboot system now.

A note on the Google FRP lock
Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is Google’s anti-theft feature. After any factory reset, the Phone 2a will ask you to sign in with a Google account that was previously used on the device. If you do not know those credentials, you will be locked out, which is exactly the point of FRP. Always remove your Google account before reselling, or be ready to verify it during setup. If the phone was lost or stolen, the correct route is the reset with Find My Device (Google) service, which lets the legitimate owner erase it remotely while keeping the lock in place.

No. A Nothing Phone 2a hard reset wipes your data and settings but keeps the current installed version of Nothing OS and Android. To change the firmware itself you would need to flash it, and that may require the correct Android USB drivers on your computer first.

The wipe itself usually completes in under a minute. The first boot afterward takes several minutes as the system rebuilds, so do not assume it is stuck if the screen sits on the Nothing logo for a while.
Can I recover files after a factory reset?
Realistically, no. A factory reset is designed to make data unrecoverable, which is why backing up first is essential. Anything synced to your Google account or saved to cloud or a computer can be restored after setup, but data left only on the phone is gone.
