If your phone is freezing, stuck in a boot loop, riddled with malware, or you’re about to sell it, a Google Pixel 8a hard reset wipes everything and returns the device to its factory state. The Pixel 8a runs near-stock Android (currently Android 15 with Pixel updates), so the steps are clean and predictable. When you need a hard reset
A factory reset on the Pixel 8a makes sense in a handful of situations:
- Persistent crashes or lag that survive a normal restart and clearing app caches.
- Boot loops or a phone stuck on the Google logo, where you can’t even reach the home screen.
- Selling, trading in, or gifting the device, so none of your data goes with it.

Before you start
A factory reset is irreversible, so prepare first:

Method 1 – Factory reset from Settings
This is the cleanest way to perform a Google Pixel 8a hard reset when the phone still boots and you can unlock it.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap System.
- Tap Reset options.
- Select Erase all data (factory reset).
- Tap Erase all data, enter your PIN, pattern, or password if prompted, then confirm with Erase all data again.
The Pixel 8a will reboot, wipe its storage, and restart on the initial setup screen. The whole process usually takes a few minutes. When it boots back up, you’ll sign in with the Google account that was previously on the device to clear the anti-theft lock.
Method 2 – Hard reset from Recovery

A note on the Google FRP lock
Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is Android’s anti-theft feature. After any factory reset, the Pixel 8a demands the username and password of the last Google account that was signed in on the device before the wipe. This is deliberate: it stops a thief from resetting a stolen phone and using it. Make sure you know those credentials, and if you’re selling the phone, remove your account first via Settings > Passwords & accounts before wiping.
