When you need a hard reset
A factory reset is the right tool in a few specific situations: persistent crashes or freezes that survive a normal restart, a phone stuck on the Google logo, severe battery or performance problems after a botched update, forgotten lock screen credentials, or preparing the device for resale or trade-in. Before you start
A reset erases photos, messages, apps and accounts permanently. Take a few minutes to prepare:
- Charge the phone to at least 50 percent, or keep it plugged in, so it does not die mid-wipe.

- Know your Google login. You will need the username and password of the account on the phone to get past the anti-theft lock after resetting.
Method 1 – factory reset from Settings
This is the easiest way to do a Google Pixel 9 Pro hard reset when the phone still turns on and you can unlock it.
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap Reset options.
- Tap Erase all data (factory reset).
- Scroll down and tap Erase all data, then enter your PIN, pattern or password if prompted.
- Confirm with Erase all data again. The phone wipes itself and reboots to the setup screen.
The whole process usually takes a few minutes. When it restarts, you will go through the standard Android setup, where you can restore from the backup you made.
Method 2 – hard reset from Recovery mode
Use this when the screen is unresponsive, you forgot your lock credentials, or the phone will not boot normally. The Pixel 9 Pro uses the standard Pixel button combination.
- Power the phone off completely. If it is frozen, hold the Power button for around 10-30 seconds to force it off.
- Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button together until the device vibrates and the Bootloader (Fastboot) screen appears.

A note on the Google FRP lock
Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is Google’s anti-theft feature. After any factory reset, the Pixel 9 Pro asks you to sign in with a Google account that was already on the device. If you do not know that account, you will be locked out at setup – this is by design to deter thieves.
